Fire Breaks Out at S. Alam Sugar Mill in Karnaphuli

Chittagong, March 4, 2024—On Monday (March 4) around 4 PM, a fire broke out at the S. Alam Group’s sugar mill in Karnaphuli’s Maizartek area, according to sources.
Mr. Subrata Kumar Bhowmik, the managing director of S. Alam Group, stated that the fire erupted around the mill while operations were ongoing. It remains unclear whether anyone is trapped inside or the source of the fire. Efforts are underway to assist the fire service in extinguishing the flames.
Mr. Bhowmik mentioned that 1 lakh metric tons of imported unpaid sugar from Brazil was stored in the warehouse, slated for release in Ramadan. These sugars were yet to be processed for market release.
Senior station officer of Karnaphuli Fire Service, Shoeb Hossein Munshee, reported that upon receiving news of the fire, they initially dispatched 6 units to the scene. As the threat escalated, an additional 6 units were deployed.
The Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have joined efforts to control the fire.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
